Start with a clear baseline

A baseline is simply the first useful photo in a visual record. Use even lighting, keep the camera steady, and make sure the spot is in focus. Include enough surrounding skin to help you identify the same location later, while keeping the spot large enough to see clearly.

Record the date and body location. If you add a note, keep it factual: for example, why you decided to photograph the spot or whether a clinician has already examined it. Do not use an app-generated label as a medical conclusion.

Repeat the conditions, not just the photo

Differences in angle, light, focus, camera distance, and skin tension can make an unchanged spot appear different. When taking a later photo, return to similar lighting and hold the phone at approximately the same distance and orientation.

• Use the same camera when possible.
• Avoid beauty filters, color correction, and portrait effects.
• Keep the skin relaxed and use a neutral background.
• Retake blurred, shadowed, or overexposed images.

Compare images side by side

Side-by-side viewing is usually more informative than switching back and forth from memory. Compare the overall framing first. If the camera conditions are very different, treat the comparison with caution and consider taking a more consistent image.
